proud to be an american?

ok i want to write this down so i remember this. this is undeniably one of the moments i will remember for the rest of my life. i remember, 10 years ago, when i was in 8th grade, the world trade center collapsed. i remember where i was, the teacher i was in class with, the people i was with, and the reaction of the teachers as we watched on TV the smoke and destruction. i remember going home and hearing my mom and dad talk about it. now, ten years later, i am at a bar in charlottesville, virginia. small town, pretty liberal, the place i have built my home for 5 years now. i love it here and i have the fondest memories of friends and family. however, tonight was something different. finally, my little ole home town gets a chance to speak politically. 4 years ago when obama was on his campaign trail he stopped here and got overwhelming support with his idealistic fanfare. charlottesivlle is the liberal pocket of virginia. we were dubbed “obamaville” along with countless other cities across america. that was awesome! i support obama! but the scenes i just witnessed were beyond belief and such a far cry from my values and how christ would have reacted.

i was catching up with stephen at the virginian. this is like, the most elite uva bar on the corner. everyone who is anyone in uva scene hangs out there. it’s small and crowded, but they have great drink specials (durrrrty bandini anyone??). so we are on our second drink, talking about the wedding, when all of a sudden some people yell ” GOO AMERICAAA!!! FREE SHOTS!!!!” i look up and see the phillies mets game on TV, so i’m like shoot, GO PHILS!!! duh kate. on the other tv is the breaking news that osama is found dead. stephen and i rush to the bar to get our free shots (obvi). the scenes that insued made me want to cry. i couldn’t believe it. people in the same exact bar i was in, on a sunday night, right in the middle of finals, were high fiving, dancing on tables, smiling, hugging, country music blasting with bartenders screaming along, celebrating the promotion of anti-terror zeal. is this the way we celebrate deat h in virginia?  the bar went quiet as obama spoke. “everyone should celebrate his demise”? ?? are you kidding me? what are you a christian?

amen. i am not the one who judges here, and god extends mercy to everyone. i think about jesus after the last supper in john 13-17, his love and desire for the apostles to understand His mission and character, and how he prays for his disciples and for all believers. maybe he had this exact day in mind. “Father, forgive America, for they do not know what they are celebrating”. i think about how he preaches the word to EVERYONE, trusting that god can redeem them all! was osama beyond redemption? what about his family and his friends? by no means am i condoning what he did and supposedly orchestrated (without getting into the politics of that), but by no means would God condone murder PERIOD.

The most depressing part about tonight was this: every one of the people in the virginian tonight probably would profess a christian faith while they danced on the booths in front of the CNN news casters singing “God bless this land”. i never fancied myself to be the christian bubble type, but maybe i am. i had more hope for america. in the past 4 years of being a disciple of jesus christ i have probably shared my faith with some of the people in the virginian tonight. This is my country, and that was my University. if nothing else, tonight was a reminder to live as a stranger in this world. God i pray that we can be forgiven for the sin that we condone, accept, and justify. Father, i know your righteousness will be celebrated and every knee will bow, and i pray for our trust in Your promises.

1 timothy 4:1-5  1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations…

john 8:7-11 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.   9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”   11 “No one, sir,” she said.  “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

1 corinthians 1:22-25  22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

romans 12:1-3   1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
